Casio Launches 3 new Red Bull Watches at Hockenheim race track


Hockenheim, July 22 2010 – Today, at a rainy Hockenheim circuit, which hosts the Formula One German Grand Prix this Sunday, Casio Computer Co. Ltd. launched three new watches, produced in collaboration with Red Bull Racing. The code names of the EDIFICE watches – EFE-504RBSP, the EF – 550RBSP and the EFA-131RBSP, reflect the link to the Red Bull Racing Formula One Team.

Around two hundred racing journalists, packed the Red Bull Energy Station in the circuit paddock, to learn about the new watches, in a light hearted presentation hosted by former F1 driver David Coulthard and his co-commentator on British television, Eddie Jordan. Representing Casio, were Hidekazu Tanaka, Global Marketing Manager of Casio and Harald Schroeder, General Division Manager Marketing of Casio Europe, who explained the exciting technical aspects of the watches, as well how the link to Red Bull Racing had helped to bring them to a wider global audience.

“These new models feature needle and disc indicator stopwatch timing, which perfectly reflects a dynamic motor sport image,” commented Tanaka. Additionally, the watches have a panel made from the same high-tech carbon material used on the Red Bull Racing Formula One cars and they are engraved with the phrase, “Casio is a Team Partner of Red Bull Racing,” commemorating an association that dates back to last year. So it was particularly satisfying today, to be able to present watches to Mark and Christian as a sign of our on-going partnership.”

The F1 journalists always quiz teams about their new car designs and today, they were also interested in how much work went into a specialist watch like those on show today. “Producing watches is a complex process and people in Formula 1 will understand the need for close tolerances and highly accurate work,” explained Schroeder. “These three watches shown today are particularly complex because of the engines needed to drive many of its functions, including the needle and disc indicator on the stopwatch and it has taken us a year to bring them from the design stage to completion.”

Arriving slightly late for the presentation, because of a delayed flight were team driver Mark Webber and team principal Christian Horner. “Our late arrival had absolutely nothing to do with the accuracy of our Casio watches,” joked Horner. In fact, Horner was personally involved in the design stage of the watch, suggesting ways of using the branding and colours.

As for Mark Webber, he revealed he is a big fan of the Casio watch he has been using this year. “I do a lot of cycling and it comes in very useful for that, as it has so many functions that help me calculate average speed and other factors.”

Mark Webber drove brilliantly to win the British Grand Prix two weeks ago and the team made all the headlines that weekend. So when one journalist asked the team principal if he could reveal which of his two drivers, Mark or Sebastian was the first to receive the new watch, Horner smiled as he delivered the perfect reply: “Both drivers received the watches at the same time and we have plenty of spares, so there will be no difficulties on the watch front this weekend at the German Grand Prix!”
