Laser scanner

The reading rate of the scanning module is crucial for high-speed, reliable identification of the barcode. Scanners with a capacity of 100 scans per second are standard with CASIO MDA terminals. Whether they are used for contact or non-contact scanning, the scanners operate with consistent accuracy. Thanks to the excellent performance of the laser scanners that CASIO installs, even relatively faint or imperfect barcodes or those that are located on uneven surfaces, (underneath foil or on curved surfaces) do not normally present any problems.

I/O box

The I/O box serves to transmit the data from the terminal to the PC or the network (LAN I/O boxes). The I/O box also enables the programme to be transferred to the terminal. CASIO provides reliable data transmission protocols for both purposes. To avoid plug-in connections that are prone to interference, the I/O box and terminal are fitted with a special infra-red interface. In addition, the I/O box can take care of charging any batteries that are installed.

Cascade connection

If it is not possible or desirable to provide a PC for every terminal, the I/O boxes belonging to the terminals may be interconnected. This makes it possible to link up to 8 or 16 I/O boxes in series. By using up to 7 parallel master I/O boxes, a total of 56 (satellite) I/O boxes can be connected with a single PC. The cable may measure anything up to 1000 m in length, thus enabling even large areas to be fitted out without any difficulty. Intelligent control reliably regulates the data transmission from the separate I/O boxes to the PC.

(Rechargeable) Battery technology

The superior quality (rechargeable) batteries supplied by CASIO provide maximum performance and service life coupled with compact dimensions. As a matter of principle, only Li-ion batteries which do not exhibit the memory effect of the conventional Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh batteries are supplied. The small or medium-sized battery belonging to the EG-800 is a special item. These rechargeable batteries are manufactured using the latest Li-polymer technology and adapted to the body shape of the appliance. These batteries do not suffer the memory effect either.

IrDA interface

This infra-red interface can transfer data to or from the terminal quickly and easily, or drive a printer, for example, which is a definite advantage for mobile assignments. All CASIO terminals are fitted with an IrDA interface of this kind as a standard item, in order to avoid unreliable cable connections. The data transmission protocol for this interface is standardised, so that different makes of appliances can also communicate with one another. It has a transmission rate of up to 115.2 kbps.

Readable barcodes

The scanners of CASIO's MDA terminals can basically read all the customary barcode standards on the market up to a resolution of 0.15 mm, with a pre-selection option via the application (see 'laser scanner' as well).

F-ROM (Flash ROM) memory

This is a storage medium that can back up the stored data without the need for a power supply. This prevents data being lost, for example, when the user has not heeded the low battery warning and the emergency electricity supply fails at the same time. If the application is deposited in the appliance's F-ROM memory, it is not necessary to enter it again in the event of a power cut. The CompactFlash or PCMCIA card, which can be inserted in several devices, is an ideal mobile data carrier. All CASIO terminals are equipped with an F-ROM memory feature as a standard item.

IP protection category

Standardised classification system for protective measures to guard against the damaging effects caused by solid foreign bodies or water penetration. All CASIO terminals (with the exception of PA-2400) are splash-proof in accordance with IPX2.

Drop resistance

When used in tough commercial or industrial environments, a form of protection against mechanical damage is of the utmost importance. For this reason, all CASIO terminals undergo rigid tests to ensure that they stand up to the demands of a daily work routine. You will find the relevant values for the respective terminals under "Technical Data".

Touch screen display

Touch-sensitive displays are used for both signature and data input. The advantage is the simple operation of the device.

HAST colour display (Hyper amorphous silicon TFT colour display)

CASIO has designed this display with its 320x240 (image) dots, up to 65,536 colours and exceptional brilliance, so that information depicted on the screen can be quickly and easily identified even under unfavourable conditions, such as bright sunshine or darkness.

Power management

To ensure optimum exploitation of the power supply, CASIO MDA's are equipped with a Power Management feature which can control the duration of the background illumination or the automatic switch-off if there has been no activity for some time. In addition, a warning is issued and the appliance may be switched off if the battery power drops below a certain level. Power Management also monitors the back-up battery of CASIO terminals to avoid data loss.
